The subject is the moment in the Book of Daniel, chapter 5, when a disembodied hand writes on the wall of Belshazzar's banquet hall. The king had brought out the gold and silver vessels taken from the Jerusalem temple to drink from them, and the writing, "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin," was read by Daniel as a sign that Belshazzar's kingdom was numbered and divided. The king was killed that same night, when Babylon fell. The subject drew many artists in the nineteenth century, and this color engraving, dated in its record to between 1850 and 1880, shows how the scene was reimagined for printed Bible illustrations and popular audiences of that era.
