Little is recorded about Mrs. A.D. McDay, but this glass negative places her before a National Photo Company camera on April 6, 1923, a date taken from a related negative because the original caption is torn. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., studio known for portraits and news pictures in the early twentieth century. Streaks and blemishes across the plate come from natural deterioration of its original coatings, a reminder of how fragile glass negatives are. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947.
