Margaret Campbell Goodman is the named sitter, and the negative is dated May 2, 1923, though that date comes from notes the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The Washington, D.C., studio operated from about 1906 to 1936 and produced a large body of portraits and news pictures of the city's people and events. Herbert A. French gave the glass plate to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers should look for the streaks and blemishes that come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings on the glass.
