The Statue of Liberty stands at the center of this poster, but the title, "Democracy... a challenge," turns a familiar national symbol into a question: democracy as something that must be defended, not simply inherited. Printed in silkscreen in 1936, it comes from the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, whose poster unit used the inexpensive method to produce bold, graphic images for public information and civic messages. The date stamped on the back, August 1, 1940, shows the sheet was still being handled several years after it was first printed, a reminder of how long these government posters stayed in circulation.
