Titled "Our Friend," this color lithograph was produced for the National Citizens Political Action Committee, a group with close ties to organized labor that worked to mobilize voters for Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1944 reelection campaign. Ben Shahn, a painter and graphic artist known for his social realist work, created it in the last year of Roosevelt's life, when the president was seeking a fourth term. The record also links the poster to African American political activity and union organizing, themes that were central to the coalition supporting Roosevelt and worth noting in how the image presents ordinary voters as the president's allies.
