Grant appears here on horseback, the saddle a reminder of how much of his public life was spent in the field before he ever sat in the White House. The title, "Our Old Commander," points to the affection and loyalty his Union soldiers felt for him during the Civil War, when he led the Union armies to victory from 1864 to 1865. Such images circulated widely in the years after the war, when Grant's reputation as a military hero helped carry him to the presidency in 1868. The equestrian pose was a familiar way to show a commander as steady and in command.
