Few campaign lithographs of 1884 put a presidential ticket in such patriotic company. This chromolithograph from the Continental Publishing Co. of Chicago pairs Grover Cleveland and Thomas A. Hendricks, the Democratic nominees for president and vice president, with the earlier Democratic heroes George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson, and a figure of Columbia, the national personification. The design argues that Cleveland and Hendricks carried forward the party's founding traditions. Cleveland went on to win that November, becoming the first Democrat elected president after the Civil War.
