Official portraits of American presidents have hung in the White House and federal buildings since the early 19th century, when painted likenesses became a way to show the continuity of the office from one administration to the next. Early portraits were often painted from life by artists who traveled to sit with their subjects, and later works drew on photographs and new printmaking methods to reach wider audiences. Across the collection, the choices of pose, setting, and symbolic objects reveal as much about the period that produced each image as about the man pictured.
