The Broderick Monument stood in Lone Mountain Cemetery, the main burial ground of early San Francisco, and honors David Broderick, a U.S. senator from California who died in a duel in 1859. Its presence here reflects how quickly the city's public memory took shape after his death, when a monument on a hill above the city became a place of civic remembrance. This print is one half of a stereographic pair, issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the albumen process it uses was the common method for stereo views of the 1860s. The record's dating and caption details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
