Few monuments in 1860s San Francisco carried as much political weight as the one raised over the grave of Senator David C. Broderick, a Democrat killed in a duel in 1859 after opposing the proslavery faction in his party. This close-up is one half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, meant to be viewed through a hand stereoscope for a sense of depth. Lone Mountain Cemetery, where the monument stands, lay on the city's western edge, and cards like this carried the memorial's image to readers far from California.
