Few images from the 1860s capture the Catholic Cemetery at Lone Mountain, which lay on the hill that gave the district its name in the western part of San Francisco. The picture is one half of a stereograph pair issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and only this side survives in the Library's holdings. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images fused into a single scene with depth, a popular parlor entertainment in the 1860s. The albumen print preserves the burial grounds as they stood during the city's rapid growth, before the cemeteries were later moved south to Colma.
