A small engraved seal of New York, dated 1818, stands out because its record says it was lifted from a larger engraving of the Declaration of Independence, so the image was made to be a detail within a bigger work. The plate is credited to Geo. Murray and published by John Binns, a Philadelphia printer and radical émigré from Ireland. Engravings like this were common in the early nineteenth century, when states used official seals on documents and printers reproduced them to show civic pride. The record's details come from an older caption card and have not been independently verified.
