Lynchburg sits on the James River, and this 1908 view takes in the city from above, showing its hilly streets, rooftops and riverfront at a time when the town was a busy center of tobacco processing and rail traffic. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the early 1900s, when photographers and map makers often climbed a tall building or hill to record a town's layout in a single frame. Lynchburg's reputation as the "City of Seven Hills" is easy to see in such a panorama, and the picture is useful for tracing how the city was built up around its streets and waterfront.
