The title's qualifier, "by day," sets this view apart: it shows the street known for its gambling houses in full daylight, with the crowds and storefronts visible rather than the lamplit scenes that dominate popular accounts of Chinatown. Arnold Genthe, a German-born photographer who settled in San Francisco in 1895, made a long series of Chinatown pictures in the late 1890s, and related negatives with similar titles survive in the Library of Congress. His work captured a neighborhood that many outsiders knew mainly through rumor, and his street scenes give a plain record of how its daily life was lived in the open air.
