A column of flame twisting through a street in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarter gives this print its drama, and its title, "The whirlwind of fire attacked Yoshiwara street," names the fire-storm effect that swept the district. The print is dated between 1923 and 1925, placing it in the wake of the Great Kanto earthquake of September 1923, whose fires destroyed much of Tokyo, including the Asakusa ward where Yoshiwara lay. Its Japanese text and its place as No. 5 in an album suggest it was one of a series recording the disaster for a broad audience. The maker is identified only by the initials S.K., so the artist's full identity remains a question for further research.
