A quiet interior at 25 Mortimer Street in London, dated June 1900, is one of the few pictures in this group that is tied to a specific address. The print is a platinum process image, a method prized by photographers of the period for its soft, velvety tones and deep shadows. For years it was credited to the American photographer F. Holland Day, but it is now thought to have been made by one of his contemporaries, and the catalog links it to Alvin Langdon Coburn, a young American photographer working in London at the time. Its value lies in the domestic space itself, a record of ordinary rooms at the turn of the century.
