The Graybar Building rises on Lexington Avenue beside Grand Central Terminal, and this view records it around 1927, the year it was completed as one of midtown Manhattan's newer office towers. It was built for the Graybar Electric Company, and its design by the firm Sloan & Robertson shows the stepped setbacks and strong vertical lines that defined New York skyscrapers in the late 1920s. The photograph was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who worked on city architecture and registered the image for copyright, so it shows the building in its early years.
