The Britannia, a paddle steamer that Samuel Cunard's company put into service on the North Atlantic in 1840, is shown leaving Boston in this wood engraving. Cunard's ships carried mail and passengers between Britain and North America, and Boston was one of the line's American ports, so the steamer was a familiar sight in the harbor. The print appeared in The Illustrated London News in October 1847, a weekly that relied on engravings like this to show readers distant places and new technology. The caption details are unverified, so the scene is best read as a general view of Boston harbor and its shipping at the time.
