Four named stops along Yellowstone's early roads appear together here: Silver Gate, Golden Gate, Obsidian Cliff, and Roaring Mountain. Silver Gate sits at the park's northeast entrance, and the Golden Gate stretch is a steep, winding cut on the route between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris. Obsidian Cliff is a glassy volcanic ridge that Native peoples prized for toolmaking, and Roaring Mountain is a hillside of steam vents whose hissing sound gives it its name. Travelers in the late 1800s and early 1900s often photographed these spots as the park's roads opened to visitors.
