Few stretches of Yellowstone are as dramatically walled as the Golden Gate, a narrow road cut through steep cliffs of yellow and orange rock between Mammoth Hot Springs and the park's interior. This chromolithograph, copyrighted by the Knapp Company of New York around 1897, pairs that canyon with cyclists on bicycles and tricycles, reflecting the bicycle craze of the 1890s, when wheeling was a fashionable way to see the countryside. The image also shows park rangers, a reminder that the Army had only recently taken over protection of the park from poachers and vandals.
