Here the Virgin of Guadalupe appears in a Mexican American setting, with roses and a woman's figure rendered in the printmaker's own hand. Ester Hernandez, a Chicana artist from California, drew on the devotional image that has been central to Mexican and Mexican American religious life since the colonial era, and she used it to speak about women's lives and the labor and health concerns of farming communities. This impression is numbered 5/84, so it is one of a limited run of screen prints made around 1990. The work appears in the Library of Congress's *American Women* guide, which places it within the study of women's history in the United States.
