Mrs. Norman Whitehouse is shown addressing a street crowd in support of women's suffrage, a scene dated to December 1913. Outdoor speaking was a central tactic of the movement in those years, since suffragists often could not secure halls and relied on street corners to reach people who would never attend a formal meeting. By late 1913 the push for a federal suffrage amendment was drawing national attention, and news photographers such as those whose work went to George Grantham Bain's agency recorded these appeals for the press. The picture rewards a close look at how open streets became platforms for political argument.
