The steeple of Christ Church, better known as Old North Church in Boston's North End, is the subject here, shown falling in 1954 after a hurricane tore through New England. The church is famous as the site from which lanterns were hung in the steeple to signal the start of the British march toward Concord on April 18, 1775, an event tied to Paul Revere's ride. The 1954 storm damage prompted a rebuilding of the steeple in the following years, with the new work modeled on the 18th-century design. The photograph captures a moment that threatened a landmark of the American Revolution.
