A steeple crowned with a weathervane rises above the rooftops of a harbor city, a skyline that would have been familiar to generations of sailors approaching Boston. Church steeples like this one served as navigation marks and as the town's most visible landmarks, and weathervanes on them showed mariners and townspeople the wind's direction. The park's sites, including Dorchester Heights, overlook this same harbor, and in March 1776 Continental forces fortified those heights, a move that pressed the British to leave Boston. The black-and-white format keeps the focus on the outline of the rooftops and the spire.
