The title places this group at Sagamore Hill, Roosevelt's home in Oyster Bay, New York, where the Republican Party's Notification Committee traveled in the summer of 1904 to formally inform him of his nomination for a full term as president. Roosevelt had taken office after William McKinley's assassination in 1901, so the visit marked his first run for the office in his own right. Such ceremonial delegations were a standard part of American campaigns, and the estate's porch and lawn were familiar settings for these meetings. The photograph was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for news and portrait pictures of this era.
