Here the subject is a moment on the water rather than a portrait: President Theodore Roosevelt returns the salute of warships steaming past him during a review of the fleet at Oyster Bay, New York, on August 17, 1903. Roosevelt had a summer home at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, so the review took place near the place he spent much of his time away from Washington. The stereograph was made by photographer William H. Rau, who sold views of such events to a public eager for images of the president and the navy. Its two-lens format gives the scene a sense of depth, letting viewers look out across the bay at the passing ships.
