Goshen, the seat of Elkhart County, Indiana, is the place pictured here in a view of its courthouse, made by local photographer W. Parfitt and dated November 8, 1909. Parfitt registered the image for copyright with the U.S. Copyright Office that same year, which suggests he meant it to be sold as a commercial view. Courthouse photographs like this were popular in the early 1900s, when county seats were centers of local government and legal business. The print is a useful record of how a small Midwestern civic building looked at that time.
