Faneuil Hall, in the center of Boston, is the building this picture shows, and its long open ground floor was built to serve as a public market. Since the 1740s the hall has been a gathering place for town meetings and political debate, and its nickname, the "Cradle of Liberty," comes from the speeches and protests that were held there before the American Revolution. The site is now part of the Boston National Historical Park, and the market stalls below still draw shoppers much as they did in the colonial era.
