Rather than a mountain, town, or valley vista, this print takes a prickly pear cactus as its subject, which sets it apart from most views in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. It is one half of a stereograph pair, catalogued as number 76 and published around 1866, and the Library holds only this single print. Albumen prints like this were mounted on card and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave Victorian audiences a sense of depth and brought distant western landscapes into the parlor. The location is given as the San Jose Valley, though that detail comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
