Heinie Wagner, the Boston Red Sox infielder pictured here, was a shortstop and later a coach known for his steady play during the team's championship years of the 1910s. This 1911 portrait was registered for copyright by the New York photographer Paul Thompson, whose studio on Spruce Street produced many player portraits of the era. Such studio pictures were sold to fans and newspapers, and they remain a valuable record of how ballplayers were presented to the public before televised sports.
