Narrow gauge locomotives fitted with a snowplow sit at Telluride, Colorado, in this September 1940 view, a reminder of how much winter work mountain rail lines demanded. Telluride lies in a high box canyon in the San Juan Mountains, and its mining economy depended on rail links that had to stay open through heavy snow. The plow on the front of the engine shows the equipment crews used to clear drifts from the track. The picture was made during the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information years, when federal photographers documented small towns and working landscapes across the country.
