A narrow gauge locomotive fitted with a snowplow stands in Telluride, a mining town tucked into the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, in this September 1940 view. Lines like this carried ore, supplies and passengers over steep grades, and in winter the plows cleared drifts that could cut off a mountain town for days. The picture comes from the Farm Security Administration's photography program, which documented American life across the country during the 1930s and early 1940s. Its negative was later transferred to the Office of War Information, which reused many of these images for overseas audiences.
