Railroad tracks run alongside a long, roofed loading platform, the kind of shed where goods were moved between wagons, trucks and freight cars. Platforms like this were common at rural depots and market towns from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s, when rail was the main way farm produce, livestock and supplies traveled long distances. The covered design protected crates, sacks and workers from sun and rain while cargo waited for a train. Notice the open edge of the platform and the parallel rails, which show how closely the commercial life of a farming community depended on the schedule of the line.
