A gondola drifts past the open arcade of a fish market, and the boat and the water set the scene apart from the farm and barn subjects around it. The gondola suggests Venice, where canals served as streets and markets could sit right on the water so that fishermen could unload their catch straight from their boats. Covered arches like these gave buyers and sellers shelter while they haggled over the day's fish. The board's placement under barns and farms is a reminder that markets of every kind were often grouped together, whether they sold produce or seafood.
