Here the elevated roadway runs right beside the Fulton Fish Market building, the waterfront trading hall on South Street in lower Manhattan, so the photograph shows the market's low, working architecture pressed against a concrete highway overhead. The market had operated on the East River since the 1830s, and by the mid-twentieth century the highways that carried traffic along the waterfront had changed the district's rhythm of trucks, carts, and early-morning buyers. The contrast between the elevated span and the market's older street-level buildings is the detail worth studying. The market itself moved to Hunts Point in the Bronx in 2005.
