Hunts Point, in the South Bronx, became home to New York City's main wholesale food market after the old Washington Market in Manhattan was moved there in the 1960s, and its loading docks handled produce, meat and fish for the entire metropolitan region. A refrigerated semi parked at one of these docks shows how the market depended on trucking: cold-chain freight carried goods from farms as far away as the Midwest and Florida to the city's grocers and restaurants around the clock. Trucks like this one, with their insulated boxes and refrigeration units, made the overnight schedule of the wholesale trade possible.
