Canterbury Hall was a music hall on Westminster Bridge Road in Lambeth, London, and this 1862 graphotype engraving by Richard Doyle, the illustrator best known for his work for *Punch*, shows the kind of entertainment venue that drew large crowds in the mid-Victorian city. Music halls like this one combined singing, comic turns, and drinking in a single room, and they were among the most popular forms of working-class and middle-class amusement of the period. The record is thin on detail, and its caption-card notes are unverified, so the print is best read as a document of the hall's public image in 1862 rather than a precise view of its interior. Doyle's hand gives it a lively, observant quality worth looking at closely.
