Phelps Hall and its gateway stand on the Yale College campus in New Haven, Connecticut, where the gateway serves as a formal entrance into the college's older grounds. This c1901 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold large numbers of American landscape and architecture views to travelers and collectors in the early 1900s. Yale dates to 1701, and by the turn of the century its Gothic-style buildings had become a familiar symbol of the college.
