Seniors marching toward chapel at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, form the focus here, capturing a routine that shaped student life around 1908. Mount Holyoke grew out of a seminary founded by Mary Lyon in 1837 and became a college in 1888, among the first institutions to give women a full collegiate education. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose firm produced many views of American towns, campuses and landscapes in the early twentieth century. Its caption card also lists women's education as a subject, which suits the scene.
