The interior shown here is of a dungeon cell in Salem, Massachusetts, a place its label calls the "old witch jail." The name ties the building to the 1692 witch trials, when accused residents were held in local jails before the court proceedings, and twenty people were executed. The stone-and-iron cell in this photograph, however, belongs to a later jail built in the early nineteenth century, so the nickname reflects how the town remembered its past rather than the building's original age. Taken around 1935, the picture records a time when Salem's witch history drew many visitors, and it captures the dim, confined conditions that made such spaces feel like relics of that earlier era.
