The Hsin-Hua bookstore in Shanghai, whose name the catalog spells "Hsin-Sua," is shown here at a moment when its interior is packed with customers. The Xinhua Bookstore chain traced its roots to Communist base areas in the 1930s and became China's main state-run book retailer after 1949, so a scene like this reflects how books were distributed under the People's Republic. The record dates the photograph only to the 196- decade, placing it sometime in the 1960s.
