Inside the Dornier Do X, the giant flying boat built in Germany in the late 1920s, passengers and crew moved through cabins fitted more like a steamship than an aircraft. Claude Dornier designed the airplane at his works near Lake Constance, and it was among the largest aircraft of its day, carried on a wing that held a cluster of engines. The caption card dates the photograph to 1929, the year the Do X first flew, when long-distance flying boats were seen as a possible way to carry people across oceans. Worth noticing is how the interior tries to make air travel feel comfortable and familiar.
