This drawing shows the interior of the Three Gun Battery at Fort Sumter, the masonry fort on an island at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, as it looked in December 1863. By then the Confederate garrison had held the fort through a long campaign of Union bombardment, and the battered walls and gun emplacements reflected that strain. The sheet is signed by J.R. Key and dated June 1864, and it carries approval notes from Confederate officers at Weldon, N.C., and Charleston, which suggests it was prepared as an official military record of the fort's condition.
