The train in this print is shown running beside a mountain stream on its eastward run toward Vladivostok, the Pacific terminus of the Trans-Siberian line. The Trans-Siberian, known in Russian as the Velikaia Sibirskaia magistral, was completed in stages between the 1890s and early 1900s and became the main rail link between European Russia and the Far East. By 1941, when this photograph was made, the line was a central artery for moving people, freight and troops across thousands of miles of taiga and mountain country. Views like this one, showing a locomotive and cars winding along a river valley, documented both the scale of the route and the engineering needed to keep it running through rugged terrain.
