Workers are shown loading goods into a railway express car, a view of the freight handling that kept parcels and shipments moving alongside passenger trains. The picture is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, the New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, which supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the exact year is unknown, but the glass plate format places it within the period when Bain's staff relied on this medium. Express cars were a common sight at American stations of that era, and the scene shows the manual labor behind rail shipping.
