The car pictured here was built by the Watson Manufacturing Company, a firm in Paterson, New Jersey, that made railway cars during the decades when American railroads were expanding fastest. Paterson was known for its silk mills and locomotive works, and builders like Watson supplied the passenger and freight equipment that moved goods and travelers across the country. Rolling stock from this period is worth studying for its construction details, including wooden body framing, lettering, and the truck and coupling arrangements that varied from one builder to another.
