Edgard Varèse and Aaron Copland appear together in this 1961 photograph taken at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where Copland stands at half-length receiving a presentation. The occasion was the MacDowell Medal for Distinguished Contributors to the Arts, which the colony awarded to Copland that year. Varèse, the French-born composer known for pioneering electronic and percussion-heavy works, was a friend and fellow modernist whose presence signals the respect the two men held for one another. The print is part of the MacDowell Colony Records at the Library of Congress, which documents the artist community founded in 1907 and its honors.
