Clare Leighton's wood engraving *Loading* is a 1931 study of winter labor in the lumber trade, where the work of moving cut timber was done in cold and snow. Leighton, an English-born artist who settled in the United States, cut her images into the end grain of hardwood blocks, which allowed the fine white lines that give the snow and the heavy logs their texture. Her rural and working-life subjects from this period are known for treating manual labor with dignity, and this print shows the physical effort behind a trade that supplied building materials across the country.
