Wind has carved this volcanic ash near Kleifarvatn, a lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwestern Iceland, into smooth ridges and hollows. Made in 1975, it is plate 10 from a portfolio of Iceland photographs issued under the Rizzuto Fund, and it was printed as a dye transfer, a color process prized for its rich, saturated tones. Iceland's landscape of loose ash and lava fields makes erosion like this a constant force, and the picture's close attention to texture shows how the land's surface is continually shaped by weather.
