The obelisk shown here is the Washington Monument in the nation's capital, and this print dates from the summer of 1886, shortly after the shaft was finished in December 1884. Construction had been stalled for decades by funding disputes and the Civil War, and the structure was not opened to visitors until 1888, so an image from this moment captures a landmark that was complete but not yet open. The print was registered for copyright that year, and a library shelflist card links it to the lithography firm Bufford's Sons, which produced many views of American cities and monuments.
